Kulu‘i is a very rare plant and is listed under state and federal statutes as endangered. Once thought to occur only on O‘ahu, a population is now known from East Maui.

It is unknown who planted the first kulu‘i at Nā Pōhaku o Hauwahine, but subsequent plantings have come mostly from cuttings, which can, with care, be made to root.
