Lonomea grows into a large spreading tree and there are many of these trees at Nā Pōhaku o Hauwahine. A forest of this species occurs at the downslope end of the gulch, planted there in the late 1990s and a few of the smaller trees have been added naturally by seed. This species is endemic to O‘ahu and Kaua‘i. A closely related tree from the Island of Hawai‘i is Manele. The leaves of the two species are very similar, only on the Manele, these are leaflets (3-6 pairs per true leaf). See if you can find a Manele. Seeds were used medicinally and strung into lei. |
