This bench is named He noho ho‘onanea, meaning a pleasant and relaxing place to sit. It is located along the Upper North Side Trail and provides a cooling exposure to the Northeast Trades within the shade of a forest of milo, as well as a view to the Oneawa Hills across Kawainui Marsh. The complex of buildings on the lower slope of the hills is Kalaheo Highschool; and beyond to the right is the Mokapu Peninsula, home to Marine Corps Base Hawai‘i. The prominant Ulupa‘u crater marks the far end of the peninsula, just to the right of which is the much lower windward side of the crater. The Coconut Grove neighborhood of Kailua extends off to the right. The rock formation of Na Pōhaku o Hauwahine is the remains of ponded lava flows that accumulated within the caldera of the Ko‘olau Volcano. Many of the boulders here have rolled downslope and may have once been arranged in a wall on the north side of the ridge upslope. A similar wall on the south side remains mostly intact (take the Kua Trail to view). The Upper Northside Trail extends along the prominant ridge of the park just below the top of the ridge. Proceeding east takes you to a set of stairs on the right that ascends to the Kua Trail arriving at a point close to the Mo‘o image. Following this trail beyond the stairs eventuallty reaches the East Cross Trail where numerous trail options await. |
