Wahi Ua Ana means the place where rainfall (ua) is measured. The post on which the rain gauges are mounted (south from the bench) is a remnant from the days when this place was part of a cattle ranch. The bench and rain gauge post lie along the East End Cross Trail, a former cattle path connecting the two sides of the ridgeline. We can trace the path (becomes a pasture road) and the associated fence line to the north end of the park.

The vista here overlooks the upper half of Kawai Nui Marsh, with (southeast) Castle Hospital in the distance and the peaks of Olomana a little to the right. To the right of Olomana is Maunawili Valley, which drains one of the wettest areas on O‘ahu. The highest peak on the Ko‘olau mountain is Kōnāhuanui (3150 ft), looming above Maunawili Valley

From here the East End Cross Trail trail descends south to the ancient Hawaiian village site and north to the numerous trails on the north slope of the ridge. Opposite the bench is a short flight of stairs and the Kua Trail. Go this way along the ridgeline to reach the base of ka pōhaku nui and eventually the lookout (kilohana) at the highest point.

Opposite the rain gauge post is the Upper South Side Trail (going west, back to the EXIT) and the start of the Nā ‘Anu‘u Loa Trail (going east), decending as a long—and eventually quite steep—stairway down to the edge of Kawai Nui Marsh. This trail is TEMPORARILY CLOSED for repairs.

Going north a short distance beyond the bench a trail takes off on the left past our (non-potable) water supply point. This is the Upper North Side Trail, providing a different route to the base of ka pōhaku nui or to the park EXIT.

Rather rest in the shade? Take the short starway opposite the bench up to another bench under the spreading milo tree.
