P I K O |
In the Hawaiian language, piko, has many meanings, the most common of which is "navel". While it can also refer to the top of a hill, more spritually, it refers to the place where life begins, the center of things, an axis around which all else rotates. The piko at Nā Pōhaku o Hauwahine (its marker is the rounded stone in the middle of the Entrance Trail) is not the physical center of the park, but the point from which explorations—that is, the trails—radiate outward; it is the attachment of the trail system to the stem represented by the entrance/exit trail; it is the dividing or balance point between the north and south sides of Nā Pōhaku o Hauwahine state park reserve. |
